about

The songs on this album come from listening deeply in wild places. I sat with the oaks and bogs of Cedar Creek; with the ancient stone and sweet water of Lake Superior; with the beautiful tumble of life in Powderhorn Park, my neighborhood... I opened myself to the songs of the moment -- songs full of the truth and medicine of the intact wild, for our wild minds, hearts and bodies. These are songs to re-root into place, and remember our deepest connections.

It is the honor of my life to create, perform, and teach songs that can be a way back towards healing what I have come to think of as “land disconnection trauma” -- as I understand it from my own positionality as a white jewish person living in diaspora in the so-called united states of america. I know, and am ever deepening my understanding of, the wounds that live across generations of my lineage from being cut off from building a relationship to land; from land access being criminalized for my ancestors; from language loss as my ancestors assimilated into whiteness; from the destruction and loss of the physical villages that tied my ancestors to a sense of home. And I see how this trauma lives and can be recreated in further cycles of harm - internally, and within communities, and on a larger scale politically, in the perpetration of colonialism and extraction culture - here in Minnesota, and around the world. I believe that part of healing and ending the extractive cycles that hurt us all on an individual and collective level is healing our connection to place, and I believe in singing as a healing modality to help myself and others get there. The songs I am called to compose are such healing songs, and I humbly hope that they have a part to play - and I know that music and arts will be essential for - the urgent healing called for in these turbulent, transformative, and beautiful times.

Sing on ~
